As trustees on the interview panel, it is only fair to admit that we were quite sceptical about what the tests would show, but this was a key appointment and we didn't want to get it wrong. We did not look at the results prior to the interview process as we did not want them to colour our views in any way. We held candidate presentations, and then the following day interviewed candidates in a more formal setting. Lucy from PicassoHR attended the latter as an observer and had copies of the candidates' profiles.
Once we had interviewed the candidates, we then discussed their answers and many of the points that arose could be explained from their profiles. Interestingly, Lucy had raised concerns about one candidate. and the fact that he was likely to be showing high levels of stress and not be coping well with the interview process. We had seen this side of him in the presentation. The profile also indicated that he was likely to be uncomfortable with many aspects of a management role and again this was borne out in his answers to our questions.
The profiles were key in helping us make our final decision which involved three closely matched candidates who all had similar scores. As a relatively small charity, the knock on effects of getting the appointment of a new manager wrong can be huge.
Overall, it was an interesting and valuable exercise and one we would certainly repeat for any key post. It certainly left us a lot less sceptical!
